Find the one you want to climb or be on for some time. The ladder you choose could match any or all of the following incentives that you value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aligned mission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compensation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emerging field<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning new skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teaching new skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with exciting people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspired by leadership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coaching, developing people or a team<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remote or hybrid teams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identifying what you do not want on your ladder is also essential. Cultural or organizational behaviors to avoid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No mission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of career, professional, or personal development opportunities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of career mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hierarchical decision making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Groupthink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An incentive\/reward system that is not performance-based<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first job I accepted after college was with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). Their mission at that time was to extend and enhance human life. As a new graduate who needed direction for which industry to join, the mission was straightforward and engaging. As with most first jobs, meeting the incentives of learning new skills and working with interesting people was easy. Everyone was interesting as they had real-life work experience at BMS, while I had none. As I have gained more experience, the incentives of coaching and developing people have become increasingly important to me and are solid incentives for my day-to-day work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The values and &#8216;no list&#8217; on your ladder will change over your career as your priorities shift or refocus or you change. You can always pick a new ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write down the incentives you value and what you do not want in your first or subsequent job or company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use tools such as Glassdoor and LinkedIn to scope cultural and organizational behaviors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During the interview process, prioritize understanding company culture and behaviors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not all ladders are created the same.
